Wilmington’s Most Scenic Running and Walking Trails

Brandywine Creek State Park with Two Walkers
Brandywine Creek State Park

Wilmington is a haven for runners and walkers alike, with trails that cater to all levels of fitness. Here five of our favorite places to explore if you want to get our steps up and take in some fall scenery:

  • Rockwood Park & Museum
Located at 4651 Washington Street Extension, Rockwood Park’s 75-acre urban oasis has access to the Delaware Greenways Trail. This free park offers a blend of natural beauty and history, making it perfect for a peaceful walk or a run. The park’s forested paths are ideal for those who enjoy a serene environment while exercising.
  • Valley Garden Park
Nestled at 52 Campbell Road, Valley Garden Park is a hidden gem, offering a quiet retreat just outside the city. This park features a mix of paved and earth trails, with gentle hills and flat stretches. Whether you’re out for a casual stroll or a light jog, the lush surroundings provide the perfect backdrop.
  • Brandywine Creek State Park
Situated at 41 Adams Dam Road in Rockland, Brandywine Creek State Park is perfect for those looking to combine nature with fitness. Starting at the Nature Center, you can choose from several trails, with the longest being just over three miles. For a longer workout, combine trails to extend your journey through the scenic landscapes.
  • Brandywine Park
Located at 1001 N Park Drive, this park offers the convenience of being right in the heart of Wilmington, making it perfect for lunchtime or after work. The trails run alongside the Brandywine River and are perfect for both casual walkers and serious runners. The park’s proximity to the Brandywine Zoo adds a unique charm, making it a popular spot for locals.
  • Jack A Markell Trail
This 5.5-mile trail is a must for those who enjoy variety in their exercise routine. The Jack A Markell Trail, also known as the “JAM” trail, connects the Wilmington Riverfront with the City of New Castle. Whether you’re walking, running or cycling, this trail offers beautiful waterfront views and a smooth path for all activities.

Is a Running Club For You?

If you’re looking to take your running routine to the next level, joining a running club might be the perfect solution. Here’s why:

  • Community Support: Running clubs offer a sense of community and camaraderie. You’ll find encouragement, advice, and companionship with people who share your passion for running or walking. It’s a great way to make new friends and stay motivated.
  • Structured Training: Many running clubs offer structured training programs led by experienced runners. Whether you’re training for your first 5K or your tenth marathon, these programs can help you achieve your goals with guided runs, speed work, and long-distance training.
  • Accountability: When you join a club, you’re more likely to stick to your routine. The regular meetings and group runs provide accountability, making it harder to skip a workout.
  • Fun Social Events: Beyond the exercise, running clubs often host social events, charity runs, and team races. These activities add an extra layer of enjoyment to your running experience and give you something to look forward to.

A few local running clubs to look into are Fusion Running Club, Pike Creek Valley Running Club and the female-only group Girls Really into Trails (GRIT).
