Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki and Chief of Police Wilfredo Campos have announced the launch of the 103rd Wilmington Police Academy, welcoming six recruits who have completed a rigorous selection process. Chosen from 77 applicants, this class includes a diverse group, with 83% identifying as minorities—three Black males, one Hispanic male, one Hispanic female, and one White male—reflecting the department’s ongoing commitment to increasing diversity.

Chief Campos expressed excitement about the new recruits, emphasizing their potential for impactful careers in public service. The selection process included a written exam, physical fitness test, interviews, and psychological and medical evaluations.

Mayor Purzycki praised the department’s dedication to public safety and highlighted the importance of this new cohort in fostering community trust. The recruits’ training will start early each day with physical fitness, followed by eight hours of classroom instruction covering Delaware law, patrol procedures, de-escalation tactics, and more.

The Wilmington Police Department’s recruitment team actively promotes career opportunities through high school and college events, including outreach to Historically Black Colleges and Universities. As the academy begins, the department is also accepting applications from certified officers until July 19. For more information, visit WilmingtonDe.gov/CityJobs.
