Waive those rainbows high and proud, it’s Pride Month!! For the month of June, Wilmington will be celebrating pride month, which commemorates and appreciates the LGBT community. More specifically, it honors the Stonewall Riots that took place in Manhattan in 1969. These riots played a large role in furthering the LGBTQ liberation movement. Wilmington will be showing it’s support and participation in the celebration in a number of ways, including:
Wilmington businesses are encouraged to display a Delaware Pride decal, designed by Spaceboy Clothing on Market Street. The decals are free to participating businesses, and can be obtained at several places around the city, including the Mayor’s Office, The Mill, West End Neighborhood House, Oddity Bar, Downtown Visions, the Visitor’s Bureau and the NCCo Chamber.
Or you can email Dan Sanchez at DSanchez@WilmingtonDE.gov.
Probably the most highly anticipated event is a special one-night-only showing of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which also happens to star Dan Sanchez, the mayor’s Digital and Social Media Manager and regional theater actor.
Made possible by a partnership with the Milburn Stone Theatre, the performance will be held at The Queen on June 8 at 8 p.m. and will benefit the Light Up The Queen Foundation’s Arts Education Program.
Theatre N will hold a monthlong LGBTQ film festival, with weekly screening set to include The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert, Call Me By Your Name, The Kids Are All Right and Moonlight.
Rounding out the month will be “Pride Night with the Wilmington Blue Rocks” on June 28, where fans can enjoy a Dogfish Head Happy Hour from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the First Base Picnic Area. Click here for tickets.
